Listen to the Daylight Spotlight Podcast

The quick overview:
Part 2 – with Sophia Bell, joined by her mother, Brenda Bell
She shreds
– both on the bike and on the bass guitar. By her active lifestyle, you’d never know that Sophia lives with the realities of spina bifida with tethered cord syndrome. She and Brenda talk about resources that have contributed to both of their health journeys, including meditation and physical therapy. The family’s perspective of prioritizing personal health over podium will encourage listeners to show up for themselves.

In case you missed it, be sure to listen in on Part 1 with Sophie’s brother, Hunter Bell.

Little Racers — Sophia with her big brother Hunter raced the Snow Cone MTB race at Iceman Cometh starting at an early age.The Bells have always approached cycling as a family activity. The kids were encouraged to be a part of group events and competitions, such as Make a Wish and MiSCA (Michigan Scholastic Cycling Association), as well as community cycling events like Iceman.

They still support one another at cycling events.
Both Sophia and Hunter participated in MiSCA in Jr High and High School and participate at public cycling events with their mom and other friends to this day.

Brenda Bell is probably Sophia’s biggest fan.
If she’s not riding along, she’s cheering from the sidelines. Brenda encourages Sophia to do the things she loves to do while listening to what her body needs as far as care and recovery.

Sophia still races despite a continuing issue with tethered chord — a disability in which her spinal cord is partially fused with one or more vertebrae. Sophia has endured 3 back surgeries in her lifetime and has experienced significant discomfort at times.
Still, she shows up for herself to do what she loves. When she’s not on a bike or busy with schoolwork, she’s shredding her bass guitar to Pink Floyd.
We’re waiting patiently for her band’s first album to be announced.
